Cydcor began a project working with EARTHS magnet school this year to mentor and tutor students for the elementary school.

Each day of the week, two different team members from Cydcor volunteer for an hour in one of these classrooms, working with children and teachers on a variety of projects and learning sessions.

Last year, Cydcor team members created literacy kits for faculty, which contained games and activities for students to encourage reading comprehension. Volunteers also assisted the school in a gardening project – in line with the earth science focus of the magnet school.

“Cydcor volunteers are a true gift to our students! Our kindergarten children look forward to interacting with the Cydcor staff, and their presence allows students to receive individual and small group time,” said Jennifer Boone, principal of EARTHS. “The time and impact mentors have on our children is priceless. Cydcor is a true example of a business that gives back to the community.”

“Our goal is to support EARTHS by mentoring the kids, helping them cultivate confidence in their own skills and abilities,” said Cydcor Chief Operating Officer Vera Quinn. “Gaining the academic skills to succeed is just one part. Mentorship is so important to the overall development of children, and we really want to make a difference in their lives.”

After all the hard work and energy our team put into the Cydcor Day of Smiles event, we were ready for some fun and games! Our team recently got to let loose a little at our Cydcor Night Out.  Games, sunshine and smoothies were found at our gathering.

At Cydcor, team member happiness is important to us.  We want to make sure our team is engaged, developed and feels a sense of purpose.  Sometimes that means having fun too.

Thousands of reasons… (and dollars) to smile!

Oct 10, 2013

This past weekend, the Cydcor team hosted our first “Day of Smiles,” a fundraiser held throughout the United States and Canada among our network of independently-owned sales companies for Operation Smile.  In addition to our own team members, more than 200 participating sales companies put their sales powers to work to raise money to provide cleft palate surgeries for children! Though we have been supporters for years – and have raised enough for two medical missions, one of which took place last year in Rio De Janeiro – Operation Smile is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, and we wanted to do something special and help fund our third medical mission.

The grand tally isn’t in yet, but we are definitely on track to achieving that goal thanks to the dedication and hard work of our team members and sales offices! We will keep you updated on our tallies as more independent sales company volunteers send in their funds.  I estimate that we had more than 2,000 people volunteering their time participating in the Day of Smiles. Imagine that… 2,000 people focused on changing the world and many lives at the same time.

At Cydcor, our team members went door-to-door and stood outside Jersey Mike’s in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and Newbury Park, along with Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas.  Special thanks to them for their support! It’s just another example of the community come together to work toward a shared goal.

Once again, a huge appreciation to our team members and volunteers who supported the effort.  We are looking forward to making a huge difference in the lives of children and their families around the world. Watch the dollars grow and check out Cydcor’s Operation Smile Page.

Using Sales Power for Good: Cydcor on Fundraising

Cydcor Operation Smile

This week the team at Cydcor and its network of independent sales offices will launch the Day of Smiles campaign for Operation Smile.  Operation Smile is a nonprofit that provides cleft palate surgeries to children all over the world.  One in ten children globally are born with a cleft palate, and many of them do not survive past the age of one.  This summer, Cydcor and its sales network were able to a medical mission that would provide downs of surgeries to children in poor areas.  Last year, the company raised enough money to provide nearly 100 surgeries, and the goal is double this year.  The day of smiles campaign will last October 4th through the 6th, and the goal is to raise $150,000 by the end of the short campaign.  Here are our favorite tips on how to raise money for your cause:

  1. Ask everyone you know to support you.  Remember you friends want to help you out, and you may need to ask more than once.  Ask people directly, with a personal touch, rather than just posting about it online. It is more work to do it that way, but you will get better results.
  2. Do something fun!  At Cydcor, we held garage sales, casino nights, bowling tournaments and sold brown bag lunches to raise funds.  Plan a low cost event or something to sell that incentivizes people in your community.
  3. Do not stop sharing.  Share online, in your neighborhood, wear t-shirts, talk to everyone you meet.  Tell everyone you know all about your cause, and share facts and stories about why their donation would be helpful.  Know your cause well, and keep producing talking points to share with your network on and offline.

Vera Quinn on the Day of Smiles

I have been with Cydcor for seventeen years.  In 2010, we launched our partnership with Operation Smile.  The work we do to raise money for this cause has added an extra level of meaning to the work we do at Cydcor and our community.  We were already giving employees volunteer hours and donated to charities, but we especially appreciate our special relationship with Operation Smile. I was able to participate in the mission last year, and I got to see first hand how we have the power to change lives for good.

Vera Quinn in Brazil for Cydcor

Last year, we were able to raise enough money to fund a mission to provide cleft palate surgeries to children in need.  Cleft palates often cause complications for feeding and breathing in infants, and many of them don’t survive.  The surgeries we were able to fund have been able to change the lives of these children and their families.  The trip was able to pay for nearly 620 surgeries for patients in Brazil.

The success of Cydcor is based on our distinctive culture, which is one that is passionate about giving back to communities around the world.  We have already been able to fund one more medical mission this year, and our goal is fund another.  That is why we decided to launch the Day of Smiles Campaign. This weekend will unite participating teams from our network of more than 200 independent sales companies to raise money and hit our total goal of $400,000 for the year.

Our office has been developing programs throughout the year to raise money for our cause.  We believe this weekend alone will fund a $150,000 mission.  We ask for your support in restoring smiles to children around the world.  Please visit Cydcor’s Operation Smile Team page to donate now.  If two dozen people donate just ten dollars, we can fund a surgery.

Also, please follow Cydcor on Twitter and our Cydcor Operation Smile Facebook page to keep up with all the activity.  If you are participating in the fundraiser, be sure to tell your friends online about it with the hashtag #dayofsmiles.

Cydcor and its network of independently owned sales offices will be working together to raise funds for Operation Smile from October 4th - 6th .  The goal is to fund another medical mission over the next week.  Cydcor and its network have already funded one mission over the summer, and the new goal for the year is set at $400,000.  Fundraisers will be independently organized by each sales company and everyone is encouraged to implement their own creative ideas to raise money for such a great cause.

Operation Smile is celebrating its thirtieth year running, and employees will wear commemorative t-shirts during the fundraiser to help raise awareness and drive donations.  Here's a picture of Jennifer at Cydcor packing up the boxes of t-shirts to be shipped out to the independent sales offices.

In 2012, the Cydcor community raised enough money to fund a mission to Rio de Janiero, where a team of surgeons and medical professionals were able to provide 95 surgeries for children who were not able to live a full life due a cleft palate.

“We believe that our success is based on our distinctive culture; there is a passion we all have to give back to our communities,” said Vera Quinn, chief operating officer at Cydcor. “I personally have been on a medical mission and have seen the new smiles on the faces of these children. We have all been developing programs throughout the year to raise money. Our ‘Day of Smiles’ program will unite more than 200 independent sales companies on the same weekend to help hit our $400,000 goal.”

Garage Sale Funds Two More Surgeries!

A big thank-you to our team members who volunteered to come out last Saturday for our MEGA Garage sale to raise money for Operation Smile.  We raised over $600, which is enough to help two children have a better life by restoring their smile.

The sale took place on Saturday, September 7th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Earth Elementary School’s basketball courts.  Gently used items were donated by Cydcor team members just days before the sale.

Team members that donated items were also eligible for raffle tickets to win a lunch with our CEO, Gary Polson.  Volunteers who helped us set up and take down the sale got five tickets!  Congratulations to our winner, Miriam Caballero, who also received recognition this week from our Joy Germ Club for spreading the most smiles around the office.

The Cydcor home office has now reached our overall goal of raising $30,000 for Operation Smile.  In addition to the sale, we organized a snack bar, wine tasting, movie nights, a karaoke event and more.  The $30,000 is part of an overall company goal to fund a $150,000 medical trip overseas.  This is the second year in a row that Cydcor has been able to raise over $150,000 for Operation Smile.

Operation Smile Gala at Cipriani!

Op Smile celebrity

Last weekend, selected independent sales company owners from Cydcor’s network attended the Operation Smile black-tie gala at Cipriani in New York City. They had the opportunity to rub elbows with celebrities, interact with other high-level fundraisers, and celebrated their accomplishments together.

It was definitely a time to be celebrated; those selected have worked tirelessly with their sales companies to creatively fundraise for the organization, using creative resources to motivate their teams and help children across the globe receive new smiles. Last year, we raised enough for a medical mission to Rio De Janerio.

We’re well on our way to funding a second mission – about $118,000 has been raised so far! Check out our press release about the Cirpiraini event and our Operation Smile fundraising page. You can also take a peek – and join! – our Cydcor Operation Smile page.

Cydcor Team Members Take Part in Blood Drive

Nov 26, 2012

On November 10th, a local elementary school hosted their annual blood drive for The American Red Cross. Those interested could donate blood, be tested for a bone marrow match, or donate their hair.

Several Cydcor team members jumped at the opportunity to help! They dedicated their time by checking in donors and assisting where needed. Team member Tara Cavallaro even donated her hair – 10 whole inches of it! “I was so glad to be able to help,” she says.

Team member Lisa Stein was especially moved by meeting Robert, a bone marrow transplant survivor. He shared his story of his struggle with leukemia with her – and how the people taking the time to donate their blood and marrow could save a life. “If it wasn’t for these donors, he wouldn’t have been there to share his story,” she says. “All it takes is a simple swab to get on the registry for bone marrow.”

As for team member Lalo Burgos – attending with his young daughters was a great way to work in the community with his family. “We had a blast,” he says. “It was good to work with people in the community for such a noble cause.”

Cydcor Team Creates Literacy Kits for Local Elementary School

Apr 16, 2012

A message from Vera Quinn, chief operating officer

Once again, Cydcor team members tapped into their creative brains to provide a valuable experience to the kids at EARTHS Magnet School! Together, they created 50 literary kits in conjunction with the United Way of Ventura County, then personally donated them to the faculty. The literacy kits were designed to enforce reading and improve reading comprehension through games, worksheets, and crafts. The theme of the book that was selected to be included in the kit - habitats - aligned perfectly with the current theme of the school. Not only that, but the school was so overjoyed that they requested the original files of the worksheet and habitat game so that they could be translated into Spanish for ESL students.

There was a lot of detail and hard work that went into this project. We went above and beyond what was expected and made a real impact on the lives of children in our local community. The kit will be entered into the Ventura Corporate Games charity category as well. We have an awesome team!
