Cydcor Reviews 'Quiet' by Susan Cain

Sep 30, 2014

Head to LinkedIn to find out more information about Cydcor, located near Los Angeles, CA in Westlake Village.

Here is Cydcor's review of Quiet: The Power of Introverts In a World That Won’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain.

About Quiet: The Power of Introverts: This book looks to explore the “Quiet Revolution” by explaining how one-third of people we know are introverts. Introverts being the ones who prefer listening to speaking, who love being creative and innovative but dislike self-promotion and who favor working independently than in a team.

In Quiet, the author explains how we dramatically undervalue introverts and evidence she provides shows how much we lose in doing so. Cain shows the rise of the “Extrovert Ideal” as it expanded throughout the twentieth century, which praised witty, high-energy public figures. Often the world repeatedly overlooks the quiet introvert, that the author demonstrates through excellent research, and relatable stories of real people in history who were well-known introverts.

Why Cydcor recommends this book to future leaders: A large reason for our selection of this book is to acknowledge that the concept of a ‘leader’ doesn’t always mean someone who is brazen, bold or loud. It can be the quiet ones who offer a game-changing idea or a unique perspective in a team approach.

The author describes herself as an introvert, and when an interviewer asked why she wrote this book, she answered, "For the same reason that Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique in 1963. Introverts are to extroverts what women were to men at that time—second-class citizens with gigantic amounts of untapped talent...Our bias against introversion leads to a colossal waste of talent, energy, and, ultimately, happiness."

Quiet is filled with well thought-out research and interesting case studies, and services as a refreshing corrective to decades of unfamiliarity with introverts.

For tips and advice regarding business, leadership, and office life, head to https://www.cydcor.com/media.

Our favorite part: It may seem at first that Cain is trying to say that introverts are better than extroverts, but reading through the whole work she does a wonderful job of challenging introverts to grow in certain areas. She also challenges extroverts to consider the benefits that introverts are able bring to the table.

How to Organize Your Office

Cydcor team members are not always in the office, because they are out in the world acting as brand evangelists for clients. Traveling frequently can make it difficult to keep the office organized for days that do require deskwork.  Having appropriate storage solutions, cleaning strategy and fun décor for your desk can make your days indoors more productive and pleasant.  Check out Cydcor’s favorite office organizing tips on our new Pinterest board.  In the mean time, here are our favorites.

A place for everything. Make sure you always know where paper, pens, cards, and important information goes.  This includes having a desk caddy (we like the ones with personality!) for any tools you might be using, as well as a place to put books, snacks and odds and ends.

Business card organizers.  A small file box for all of your contact is a great way to keep track of all the cards you collect while traveling and attending events.  A bonus tip: rather than organize them alphabetically, keep them in files by their profession, so you know whom to call when looking for a specific service or information.

Out of sight out of mind.  Papers you never or rarely use should go on the bottom shelf or out of the way on the floor.  No need to clutter up accessible work space with items that do not need attention.

Three ring binders.  Binders with labels are a great way to keep track of papers if you do not have a filing cabinet handy.  Categories for papers could include specific clients, overall guidelines, a tracking of goals or other ways to organize.

Email files. Nothing is better than an empty email inbox! Some emails need to be saved for records, and don’t forget that email providers have the ability to file them into electronic folders.  Keeping your inbox clean with urgent messages marked as such can keep you on top of your game.

Make it fun! Personalized to do lists, calendars, and office décor can be motivating and satisfying.  Make sure it complies with work guidelines, but even a pencil holder can have a fun touch.

Operation Smile Gala at Cipriani!

Op Smile celebrity

Last weekend, selected independent sales company owners from Cydcor’s network attended the Operation Smile black-tie gala at Cipriani in New York City. They had the opportunity to rub elbows with celebrities, interact with other high-level fundraisers, and celebrated their accomplishments together.

It was definitely a time to be celebrated; those selected have worked tirelessly with their sales companies to creatively fundraise for the organization, using creative resources to motivate their teams and help children across the globe receive new smiles. Last year, we raised enough for a medical mission to Rio De Janerio.

We’re well on our way to funding a second mission – about $118,000 has been raised so far! Check out our Operation Smile fundraising page. You can also take a peek – and join! – our Cydcor Operation Smile page.

Our team night at a local Mexican restaurant to raise funds last week was a win! More than $800 was raised, which will give about five children new smiles.

The restaurant donated 20 percent of all proceeds to Operation Smile. A raffle was also held, with prizes ranging from Laker tickets to restaurant gift cards going to 10 team members. Highlights: Delicious food, great music, team member bonding, and meeting families. We can’t wait for our next team night – movie night at a local theater!

The Greatness of a Powerful Message

One of our sales office owners has made a big impact on me with a mission statement she wrote to capture what the purpose of her business is. She and her statement are such a great example of the best in our business – what makes us unique, and why we attract the best and the brightest.

In her mission, she talks about making sure that every person who comes into her office is given equal opportunity to be successful by creating meaningful and genuine relationships with each individual, constantly working for her people by setting the pace from the front and providing them with time and attention. She also places “importance on transferring knowledge to each person, personally, that’s necessary to open, operate, and grow a business.” Most importantly, she makes a “positive impact on every person that comes in contact with her, her staff, and her company.”

Her perspective on business is one that I feel applies to all of us. A successful business is run by successful people who are committed to achieving great things. In just a short time, she has managed to do extremely well and is one of our top office owners.

Her mission is one that should inspire all of us - good sense for great business.

Great Leaders Make Tough Choices

May 3, 2012

Listening to a book on tape recently reminded me of George Washington's great vision, leadership, and sacrifice. Every time I learn about Washington, I appreciate his leadership and ability to balance short- and long-term goals. He held true to his vision for our country, which focused on representative government, civil liberties, religious freedom, and each person being able to control his or her own destiny. The biggest obstacle to achieving this vision was King George III and British dominance over the Colonies.

Washington faced a difficult choice. He knew that creating the vision that would prove best in the long-term for our country would require short-term sacrifice. He would have to sacrifice personally by risking his life and all his personal wealth, being seven years away from his home and family. The country would have to sacrifice by experiencing short-term economic suffering as well as the deaths and raids caused by war.

Most people shy away from making such a difficult choice. Knowing that short-term sacrifice facilitates long-term success, however, makes the difficult choices easier. Thankfully for us, George Washington was willing to make the necessary sacrifices in the short-term to ensure a better future for America.

Insight from a Navy Seal

Feb 6, 2012

All of us at the recent Keys to Success event, an annual kickoff meeting attended by all sales office owners in North America, were so lucky to hear from our guest speaker, Eric Greitens, Navy SEAL and award-winning author of “The Heart and the Fist.”  The most powerful part of his message was the mindset required to survive the Navy Seal boot camp. Only about 10 percent of these highly-fit soldiers make it. Eric said that it was not the great collegiate athletes that survived. Instead, it was the ones with the greatest will.

The attributes that he described for the successful are the same ones that are needed for success in our business. Here is a sampling of his comments that I wrote down:

“Confront your fear and push yourself.”
“Courage is the courage of perseverance of willing to do the hard things day after day.”
“People quit when they think how hard it is going to be, but rarely when they are doing those hard things.”
“The Navy Seal challenges are called ‘evolutions’.  Your character evolves until you get to the place where you change who you are.”
“To get the life you want, change the compass just a few degrees and march in that direction every day.”
“If you attempt a challenge and do not succeed, the challenge always remains - the challenge always remains.”

Lessons for all of us.  Eric, we will always be grateful and learned so much from you during the conference. Your words will stick with us now and in years to come.

Lessons from an Egg

Team members test their egg drop devices.

Last week, everyone at Cydcor participated in a team building exercise where we had to create a device that would protect a raw egg from breaking when dropped about 10 feet.  We divided into groups of about 8-10 people and given a box of supplies to create the device. We had a limited amount of time and the pressure was on.  As we were working on our design, gathering all of our ideas and getting all of our brains in the game, we noticed that other groups were creating a parachute-type tissue. We did not have the tissue. We assumed every team got something different in their box.

We ended up creatively using materials such as straws, string and rubber bands to enable our egg to drop as if unwinding a yoyo. What we learned was this: If we lured down the egg, it would never break. As we had seen earlier, many of the other groups had created parachutes. We realized after the time was up that our parachute material was stuck inside the top of the box and we had not noticed.

The lesson that was reinforced in the exercise is that it is possible to come up with superior solutions with fewer resources than we think we need.  By putting our brains together, we will surprise ourselves by how creative we can be.
