The Benefits of Taking Risks

Jul 6, 2017

0 min read

By Vera Quinn, President and Chief Revenue Officer at Cydcor

When you’re ten years old, your mom is just about the last person in the world you want to hang out with. So, when my then ten-year-old son asked me if I wanted to join him for a day hike, I knew I couldn’t refuse, even though it would mean sweating profusely as I drag myself, panting and terrified, uphill for two hours, getting whacked in the face by branches, tripping over rocks, and the risk of falling over the edge of a steep cliff. Refusing to let him down, I took one agonizing step at a time, knowing eventually, if I just kept moving forward, I would climb my way to the top.

That day on the mountain left me with some valuable lessons about what is possible when you take risks, face your fears, and dig in to overcome the things that you believe are holding you back.

Here are 7 ways taking risks can change your life for the better:

  1. Do Things You’re Not Good At – Nobody likes to look stupid or fail, but only by risking embarrassment, disappointment, and failure do we create room for real change, growth, and astounding personal achievement. Put yourself out there, get uncomfortable, and create your own opportunity.
  2. Exceed Expectations - Other’s and Your Own – My son never thought I’d accept his invitation to go for a long hard hike, and I never thought I’d be able to finish it. But by pushing to exceed both my son’s expectations and my own, I opened the door to an entirely new experience and a new accomplishment I once believed was impossible.
  3. Face Obstacles Head On – As I stumbled over rocks, vines, and narrow, slippery pathways, I realized obstacles are unavoidable and the ONLY way to continue forward is to face them as they come and conquer them one by one.
  4. Stand up to Your Fears – Change is scary and so is growth. For me, climbing my personal mountain meant dealing with my intense fear of heights. But I refused to fail, not this time, and I refused to let my son down. Deciding that failure was no longer an option became my secret weapon to overcome my greatest fear.
  5. Fake it Till You Make it – Find your motivation as you go. Sometimes, you just don’t feel strong enough to take risks and face the challenges ahead. But what if you trust that your motivation will grow along the way? Sometimes just getting started is enough to unlock the motivation you needed to keep going.
  6. Take it one step at a time – Don’t focus on the mountain top you’ve got to conquer. Instead, focus on just getting through that next step, and before you know it, the mountaintop will come to you.
  7. Trust in the payoff – Even if you can’t see the benefits of risk taking, trust that eventually the payoff will reveal itself. While I struggled up that steep mountain path, I wondered what magical fairies might greet me at the peak to make it all worth it. I decided to believe there would be a payoff, even if I couldn’t imagine what it would be. When I saw the look on my sons face as I finally reached the top, I knew what all the hard work had been for.

On the mountain and in life, you can only discover what you can do when you say yes to challenges, as daunting as they may seem. No matter what obstacles have presented themselves over the years, I’ve learned that if I just keep putting one foot in front of the other, I can accomplish almost anything.

Thousands of reasons… (and dollars) to smile!

This past weekend, the Cydcor team hosted our first “Day of Smiles,” a fundraiser held throughout the United States and Canada among our network of independently-owned sales companies for Operation Smile.  In addition to our own team members, more than 200 participating sales companies put their sales powers to work to raise money to provide cleft palate surgeries for children! Though we have been supporters for years – and have raised enough for two medical missions, one of which took place last year in Rio De Janeiro – Operation Smile is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, and we wanted to do something special and help fund our third medical mission.

Cydcor worked over the weekend to raise money for Operation Smile

The grand tally isn’t in yet, but we are definitely on track to achieving that goal thanks to the dedication and hard work of our team members and sales offices! We will keep you updated on our tallies as more independent sales company volunteers send in their funds.  I estimate that we had more than 2,000 people volunteering their time participating in the Day of Smiles. Imagine that… 2,000 people focused on changing the world and many lives at the same time.

At Cydcor, our team members went door-to-door and stood outside Jersey Mike’s in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and Newbury Park, along with Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas.  Special thanks to them for their support! It’s just another example of the community come together to work toward a shared goal.

Once again, a huge appreciation to our team members and volunteers who supported the effort.  We are looking forward to making a huge difference in the lives of children and their families around the world. Watch the dollars grow and check out Cydcor’s Operation Smile Page.

I have been with Cydcor for seventeen years.  In 2010, we launched our partnership with Operation Smile.  The work we do to raise money for this cause has added an extra level of meaning to the work we do at Cydcor and our community.  We were already giving employees volunteer hours and donated to charities, but we especially appreciate our special relationship with Operation Smile. I was able to participate in the mission last year, and I got to see first hand how we have the power to change lives for good.

Vera Quinn in Brazil for Cydcor

Last year, we were able to raise enough money to fund a mission to provide cleft palate surgeries to children in need.  Cleft palates often cause complications for feeding and breathing in infants, and many of them don’t survive.  The surgeries we were able to fund have been able to change the lives of these children and their families.  The trip was able to pay for nearly 620 surgeries for patients in Brazil.

The success of Cydcor is based on our distinctive culture, which is one that is passionate about giving back to communities around the world.  We have already been able to fund one more medical mission this year, and our goal is fund another.  That is why we decided to launch the Day of Smiles Campaign. This weekend will unite participating teams from our network of more than 200 independent sales companies to raise money and hit our total goal of $400,000 for the year.

Our office has been developing programs throughout the year to raise money for our cause.  We believe this weekend alone will fund a $150,000 mission.  We ask for your support in restoring smiles to children around the world.  Please visit Cydcor’s Operation Smile Team page to donate now.  If two dozen people donate just ten dollars, we can fund a surgery.

Also, please follow Cydcor on Twitter and our Cydcor Operation Smile Facebook page to keep up with all the activity.  If you are participating in the fundraiser, be sure to tell your friends online about it with the hashtag #dayofsmiles.

Why Cydcor is A Best Place to Work
By Vera Quinn, Chief Operating Officer

What makes a great company? We can answer that - according to the recent Best Places to Work assessment sponsored by the Los Angeles Business Journal.

Cydcor ranked in the top 100 companies to work for in Los Angeles County – coming in 38th best of mid-sized companies. There are thousands of companies of our size in Los Angeles County and many of them participated in this year’s competition. As you can imagine, the LA list is quite popular. The list is in its seventh year and has grown significantly, attracting employers from all over Los Angeles County. We are proud to have been named once again!

We are doing even more with the following in the works:
· Resource staffing plans – working with departments to properly resource for success
· Performance management – a new performance appraisal process
· Compensation study – researching pay by position and responsibilities to ensure we align with the market
· Program for our people – including development of consistent onboarding, training and development programs

So, while we never rest on our accomplishments – there is a lot to make our families proud, our friends jealous, and us feel great!

One of our recent conferences shows that we love where we work.
One of our recent conferences shows that we love where we work.

Everyone can do his or her part on how to make the office a great place. Keeping a positive attitude, creating professional development goals and keeping communication lines open.

As the dominant market leader in outsourced face-to-face sales, Cydcor’s capabilities and approach to doing business are like our team members: truly unique! As someone who started with Cydcor over 17 years ago, I am honored to be part of a company that is getting recognition to be a great place to work. We are proud of our team members, and I know that we will only continue to grow stronger with all the great people we have here.

Cydcor Team Creates Literacy Kits for Local Elementary School

A message from Vera Quinn, chief operating officer

Once again, Cydcor team members tapped into their creative brains to provide a valuable experience to the kids at EARTHS Magnet School! Together, they created 50 literary kits in conjunction with the United Way of Ventura County, then personally donated them to the faculty. The literacy kits were designed to enforce reading and improve reading comprehension through games, worksheets, and crafts. The theme of the book that was selected to be included in the kit - habitats - aligned perfectly with the current theme of the school. Not only that, but the school was so overjoyed that they requested the original files of the worksheet and habitat game so that they could be translated into Spanish for ESL students.

There was a lot of detail and hard work that went into this project. We went above and beyond what was expected and made a real impact on the lives of children in our local community. The kit will be entered into the Ventura Corporate Games charity category as well. We have an awesome team!

A message from Vera Quinn, Chief Operating Officer

Ready, set, go! I'm so excited to see our Cydcor team members prepare for the Ventura Corporate Games - they are gearing up to win in numerous categories including volleyball, bowling, indoor volleyball, basketball, kickball, softball, ping pong, dodgeball, football, 5K, mini golf, bowling, and go-karts. As a corporate sponsor and winner of the JD Probasco Spirit Award in 2011, along with several medals, we have been waiting all year to participate in the event again. We're in it to win it!

To prepare for the Corporate Games, our team members had a tee-shirt competition and the winning design is being printed on the tee-shirts that we'll wear during the event. We also participated in numerous "practice" sessions, had motivational meetings, and encouraged one another to attend. During Wednesday night's opening ceremonies, we will have our own booth, participating in the run/walk/jog and enjoying the food and music.

Our enthusiasm, energy, and dedication aligns with the company's culture that focuses on bringing out the best in one another and showing pride in every task we take on.  The Corporate Games enables us to demonstrate that pride, coming together as a company to get results. We are constantly supporting one another - during the Corporate Games and on a day-to-day basis. I'm looking forward to the games and watching every participant demonstrate what Cydcor is all about - determination, drive, and the will to succeed. It's all about the team!

New Year - New Habits To Keep

Covey's Four Quadrants

New Year‘s is a time to reflect on things we want (or need) to change, from getting fit or quitting smoking to getting a better job or spending more time with family. It’s a time to replace bad habits with good ones and to follow through on them.

How many of us, however, have made our resolutions with the best of intentions, only to break them weeks or months later? Perhaps more urgent matters crop up that consume our energies, leaving us too exhausted for anything else. Or perhaps we get discouraged with our progress and lose our desire and resolve to carry on. Whenever I face just such a dilemma, I look to Covey’s third habit, “Put First Things First,” for perspective and guidance.

While Habit 2 is about self-leadership, Habit 3 is about self-management. Leadership defines the "first things,” and management is the discipline to carry them out in accordance with our core principles. “Putting first things first” means we have the will to do something when we don't want to; to say “no” to some things (even seemingly urgent things); and to act on our values, rather than on impulse. Simply, it means focusing our time on what’s truly important.

According to Covey, we can spend our time in four ways:

  • Quadrant 1: Activities that are both urgent and important (crises and problems)
  • Quadrant 2: Activities that are important but not urgent and require more initiative and proactivity  relationship building, goal setting, planning and preventive maintenance)
  • Quadrant 3: Activities that are urgent but not important (others’ priorities and expectations)
  • Quadrant 4: Activities that are neither urgent nor important (time wasters)

Habit 3 tells us to spend most of our time in Quadrant 2, to minimize our time spent in Quadrant 1 and to stay out of Quadrants 3 and 4 altogether. In doing so, we pursue our highest priorities—the relationships and results that matter. Our crises would then become more manageable because we’re proactively doing the things that prevent them from happening in the first place.

For me, “putting first things first” is not only a habit of effectiveness, but also an act of integrity to our commitments and purpose. By honoring both, we position ourselves to seize the right opportunities at the right time—ones that can enrich our lives and livelihoods in the New Year and beyond.

These departments determine what tools, technology, systems and processes are needed to run more efficient and profitable sales campaigns for Cydcor, its network of independent sales offices and its clients. In addition, Quinn directs the company’s data management, quality assurance and vendor management departments.

“Vera has made the most significant individual contribution to Cydcor,” CEO Gary Polson said. “Her passion for the field, commitment to our clients and dedication to our people and business is a driving force behind Cydcor’s overall success and positions us well for the future.”

She developed a passion for direct sales early on – successfully building door-to-door, commission-based sales teams for a variety of client campaigns, in nearly 25 independent sales offices. She was named vice president of operations for Cydcor in 2005, and senior vice president in 2008.

From vision to impact: How Vera Quinn builds a high-performance culture

Opinions expressed by Digital Journal contributors are their own.

When you look at Cydcor today—a leader in outsourced sales and customer acquisition—it’s easy to see the results. But behind its long-standing success is the leadership style of its CEO. Under Vera Quinn, Cydcor has built not just revenue growth, but a culture grounded in trust, collaboration, and development of its people.

For Vera Quinn, high performance isn’t just about chasing big targets. It’s about creating the right environment for people to hit them. At Cydcor, that means pairing a clear vision with a culture where people feel empowered, accountable, and supported to bring their best every day, aspects Quinn built and continues to foster at the long-standing company.

Under Quinn’s leadership since becoming CEO in 2020, the culture at Cydcor has shifted noticeably. “I’ve always believed energy is contagious,” she says. “If I can show up with clarity, positivity, and belief in our people, it creates a ripple effect. That energy has brought new momentum into the business and the way we work together.”

Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Agoura Hills, California, Cydcor delivers customer acquisition through in-person sales, call center operations, and digital marketing. It’s a blend of personal connection and technology that has kept some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies coming back year after year.

Quinn, who has been with Cydcor for more than 25 years, sees culture as the real engine behind results. “If you want great results, you have to invest in the people delivering them,” she says. “It’s about giving them the tools, the clarity, and the belief that they can achieve more than they thought possible.”

A vision that drives momentum

Clarity is the starting point. At Cydcor, the mission isn’t just a line on a website; it shapes how Cydcor operates and how its network of independent sales companies executes in the field. Cydcor sets the vision, standards, and client partnerships. The sales companies carry that vision forward every day in how they build teams, sell, and lead.

“When people understand the ‘why’ behind what we’re doing, they approach their work with more energy and ownership,” Quinn explains.

That alignment has helped drive some big wins. In 2024, Cydcor posted double-digit revenue growth for the second year in a row, expanded into new industries, and continued to serve long-standing clients. Independent sales companies in the field scaled their businesses, developed new entrepreneurs, and delivered the results that made those wins possible.

Recognition followed. Cydcor has now earned the DIRECTV Dealer of the Year Revolution Award for the ninth consecutive year, an achievement Quinn credits to the entire ecosystem. “Awards are never just about one person,” she says. “They’re about what the whole organization achieves together.”

Empowerment with measurable accountability

At Cydcor, empowerment doesn’t mean “hands-off.” It means providing a clear framework while giving people the room to make decisions—and the structure to track how those decisions play out.

“When people know they’re trusted to deliver, they rise to the challenge,” Quinn says. “But they also know we’re going to measure our progress, celebrate our wins, and adjust when we need to.”

That balance of freedom and accountability is one reason independent sales companies in Cydcor’s network perform so consistently. Cydcor sets the standards and tools, while the entrepreneurs in the field put them into practice. Beyond telecom, this model has helped brands expand quickly into new markets, often faster than they could on their own.

Within Cydcor, the same philosophy applies. Performance reviews, real-time feedback, and transparent communication are part of the daily rhythm. These practices ensure that the corporate team stays aligned with the independent sales companies, creating consistency across the organization.

“I’ve always seen leadership as personal,” Quinn reflects. “It’s not just about hitting numbers—it’s about knowing the people behind those numbers, and helping them believe in what’s possible for themselves.”

Developing leaders from within

One of Cydcor’s longest-standing values is supporting the development of leaders at every level. While Cydcor itself doesn’t create field leaders, it provides the platform and structure that allow entrepreneurs in the independent sales companies to grow their own organizations.

“We’ve built a place where ambition meets opportunity,” Quinn says. “If someone is willing to put in the work, we’ll match it with the mentorship, training, and resources they need to grow.”

From retail to B2B, residential sales, and event services, the programs and tools Cydcor offers help sales companies train and expand their own leaders. That support has kept a steady pipeline of entrepreneurs ready to meet client opportunities.

This culture of growth and opportunity has also shaped life inside Cydcor’s headquarters. The company has been named a Best Place to Work in Los Angeles 13 times. “People stay and perform when they can see a future here, and they can see themselves in it,” Quinn says.

Trust as a strategic advantage

For Quinn, trust isn’t just a feel-good value; it’s a performance multiplier. “You can have all the strategy in the world, but if people don’t trust their leaders and each other, it falls apart,” she says.

At Cydcor, trust is built through integrity, follow-through, and leaders modeling the behaviors they expect from their teams. The result is an environment where people share ideas openly, challenge each other constructively, and make decisions based on the best available insight.

That same trust extends to clients, who know Cydcor will deliver with consistency, integrity, and a reliable field network. It’s why so many of the company’s partnerships—whether with established Fortune 500 companies or high-growth brands—have lasted decades.

“Clients stay with us because we’re consistent and because we do what we say we’ll do,” Quinn explains. “They trust the integrity of our people and the strength of our field network. That’s what sustains partnerships year after year.”

Impact beyond the bottom line

Business performance matters, but for Quinn, it’s not the only thing that counts. Under her leadership, Cydcor has continued its commitment to giving back, donating thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours—investing time and talent locally and globally. Teams across the network have also donated hundreds of volunteer hours to causes like the Spark of Love Toy Drive, bringing joy to thousands of children and families.

“Giving back strengthens our culture,” Quinn says. “When people work together for something bigger than themselves, it builds pride, unity, and perspective.”

As Cydcor looks ahead, Quinn’s focus hasn’t changed. “We’re about results,” she says. “But the true measure of success is when those results come from a culture that lifts people up and inspires them to do more than they ever thought possible.”Quinn’s contagious energy has been a driving force behind a cultural shift that continues to inspire both the field and Cydcor’s headquarters.

30 Fastest Growing Companies of the Year 2025 - Featuring Interview With Vera Quinn

Vera Quinn, Cydcor President and CEO
Vera Quinn, Cydcor President and CEO

Cydcor was founded in 1994 on a simple yet powerful principle: people still want to buy from people they trust. While much of the business world in the 1990s was moving toward automation and call centers, the founders of Cydcor recognized that something essential was being lost. Technology could handle transactions, but it could not replace trust, loyalty, or the personal connection that uniquely comes from a face-to-face conversation. That insight shaped the company’s mission and continues to guide it today. Headquartered in Agoura Hills, California, Cydcor partners with Fortune 500 leaders as well as emerging brands across the U.S. and Canada. The company specializes in outsourced, in-person customer acquisition through a network of independently owned sales companies across North America. These companies operate in the residential, retail, business-to-business, and event services channels, creating flexible and scalable solutions to meet each client’s needs. Some clients rely on Cydcor to complement their existing sales force, while others count on Cydcor’s network as their exclusive customer acquisition channel. In both cases, the goal remains the same: driving measurable growth through meaningful interactions.

What sets Cydcor apart is its ability to combine the timeless art of relationship building with modern systems and accountability. While independent sales companies focus on customer engagement, Cydcor provides the backbone that makes scaling possible. This includes compliance oversight, detailed reporting, operational systems, and performance tracking that give clients confidence in both the process and the results. The approach has earned the trust of top Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 brands that turn to Cydcor when they need more than just numbers on a spreadsheet. They need real conversations, genuine connections, and long-term customer relationships.

Under the leadership of Vera Quinn, President and CEO, Cydcor continues to evolve without losing sight of its core belief: that business has always been built on human connection. In a marketplace where digital noise grows louder every day, Cydcor proves that face-to-face sales remain not only relevant but essential. It is a model that honors tradition while embracing innovation, ensuring clients have the reach, structure, and results they need to grow.

In conversation with Vera Quinn, President and CEO of Cydcor

“We see technology as a way to make the in-person experience even better. Our platforms, sales tools, and data systems deliver the information clients need—precisely when they need it."

– Vera Quinn, Cydcor President and CEO

Cydcor has been a trusted partner to Fortune 500 companies for more than three decades. How has your face-to-face approach helped brands stay competitive in today’s automated world?

In today’s automated world, the value of human connection and quality continues to rise because people’s needs are not one-size-fits-all. Brands spend heavily trying to break through the noise, but nothing cuts through like a real conversation. When the field teams engage face-to-face, whether in a business, at a retail store, at someone’s doorstep, or an event, it creates authenticity, accountability, and connection. That personal approach builds trust and loyalty, delivering long-term growth instead of one-off transactions. There is no substitute for the clarity and trust that comes for genuine two-way conversation.

You work across very different verticals—B2B, retail, residential, and event services. How do you customize each campaign?

It starts with listening. We take the time to understand what matters most to the client—what outcomes they want to achieve and who they’re trying to reach. From there, we apply proven strategies while piloting and refining until the approach is right. We don’t believe in copy-and-paste campaigns; every engagement is designed around the client’s goals, with a clear commitment to measurable results.

We’re also highly nimble. Offers, hours, and territory plans can shift quickly, and we adjust with speed, going where customers are and where opportunities exist. For example, in retail environments customers may need product education at the point of sale, while in B2B settings the focus is often on efficiency and ROI. Each campaign is tailored to those realities, ensuring both clients and customers feel understood.

Leading companies often credit Cydcor with helping them expand into new markets. How does your model drive that kind of growth?

We help clients grow because we’re built to scale responsibly. The companies in our network are locally run by entrepreneurs who care deeply about performance and quality. That ownership mindset allows us to move fast when a client wants to expand while still delivering consistency and quality. We’re able to test, adapt, and ramp with speed—without sacrificing the fundamentals. Because we take such pride in the brands we represent, our clients trust us to deliver with consistency and care.

Cydcor works with a network of independently owned sales companies. How does that support innovation and client outcomes?

Entrepreneurs think differently. They’re invested in doing things right because it’s their business. That ownership mindset creates a ripple effect: higher standards, better execution, and more accountability. When a client partners with us, they’re not just accessing sales teams; they’re tapping into a culture of ownership and drive. That translates into stronger performance in the field and sustained results for the brand.

You’ve been recognized as a Great Place to Work. How do culture and leadership play into your business success?

Our culture is built on the belief that people succeed when they help others succeed. That philosophy drives how we lead, how we collaborate, and how we show up for our clients and each other. Our values aren’t just words on a wall. They act as our constitution, guiding decisions and holding us accountable. Because of that, leadership at Cydcor isn’t about hierarchy; it’s about creating an environment where people support one another, push for excellence, and celebrate shared wins. That’s why our culture has become a competitive advantage and why clients trust us to represent their brands with pride.

Technology is clearly important to your operations. How do you balance that with the human side of your business?

We see technology as a way to make the in-person experience even better. Our platforms, sales tools, and data systems deliver the information clients need—precisely when they need it. AI is making our systems smarter and faster, improving everything from compliance to reporting to campaign insights. At the end of the day, technology is there to empower people. It supports the work; it doesn’t replace the human connection that makes in-person sales powerful.

What’s next for Cydcor? Any exciting plans on the horizon?

Cydcor is entering an exciting new chapter of growth. We’re expanding into new industries while continuing to strengthen relationships with the Fortune 500 and emerging brands we already serve. A big part of that future is leveraging AI and advanced platforms to enhance both the client and customer experience, delivering faster insights, sharper tools, and more seamless interactions. Driving results through the power of people remains constant, but the ways we deliver on it are evolving quickly. We also see opportunities in industries undergoing disruption, or where customers are clamoring for personalized solutions where face-to-face engagement can help brands establish trust and drive growth. That’s where our model truly shines.
