The following is a review by a Cydcor employee of For Better or For Work: A Survival Guide for Entrepreneurs and Their Families by Meg Cadoux Hirshberg.

About For Better or For Work:

This book is a remarkable guide to navigating the perfect balance of entrepreneurial business building, while still being able to enjoy a happy life at home. Hirshberg continually reminds readers that this is no easy feat, and will require great amounts of effort. Very few people have mastered running a business successfully with a balanced personal life, but the tips found in this book can get any person on the right track. For Better or For Work is a reminder that a balancing both lives is possible, using small successes that can be simple to find.

Why Cydcor recommends this to future leaders:

Entrepreneurship can be a stressful career choice. Late nights, extravagant scheming, and taking chances are all aspects of being a great entrepreneur. This book gives practical advice on building your support system together to maximize motivation and determination. Family and friends can sometimes take a back seat to an entrepreneur when they’re focused. For Better or For Work is a wake up call for any entrepreneur to spend their time more wisely, and be able to have the personal relationships they’re looking for. Any aspiring leader can find beneficial advice in this book.

Our favorite part:

Meeting challenges are difficult for all relationships, personal or professional. Hirshberg outlines useful tips on how to handle things when they get tough, like when a startup fails or a company owner resigns due to a serious illness. There are plenty of books and articles to help an entrepreneur and their company exceed; this book instead focuses on succeeding with interpersonal relationships, while still balancing the hectic life of an entrepreneur.

Cydcor ranks #14 among mid-sized companies for employee benefits and work-life balance

Cydcor was named among the “Best Places to Work” by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal for the second year in a row and ranked #14 for area mid-sized companies.

The Business Journal and Best Companies Group worked together to identify and recognize area companies like Cydcor with a strong commitment to workplace excellence. Both publicly and privately held organizations were selected based on benefits, corporate philanthropy, policies, work-life balance, internal working conditions, local management, camaraderie and support of employees’ personal growth. Selections were based on company surveys and employee comments.

“Cydcor is a company that values hard work on our clients’ behalf, but also a company that rewards our employees and contributes to our community,” said Gary Polson, chief executive officer of Cydcor. “We’re proud Cydcor has been recognized as one of the area’s Best Places to Work once again.”

Cydcor was specifically recognized for a supportive work environment and culture, open communication, quality and commitment of management and benefits. Cydcor team members are eligible for benefits in the month following their hire date. Beginning in their first year, each Cydcor employee receives 15 days of sick and vacation time. Team members can also occasionally arrange to work from home. Cydcor provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), including mental health counseling and referrals, wellness and smoking cessation programs.

In order to maintain open communication between company leaders and team members, Cydcor’s office culture includes a suggestion box, open-door policy, employee surveys and organizational newsletters.

The company culture is guided by a distinct set of highly valued behaviors. “Our values aren’t just words on paper. They are well thought out actions that represent who we are and what we do for our clients,” said Vera Quinn, senior vice president of Operations. “Cydcor team members are rewarded monthly for exhibiting the Behaviors We Value, encouraging that these values live on in our daily interactions.”

The company kicked off 2009 with brand-new Cydcor offices in Westlake Village, Calif. Approximately 100 Los Angeles area employees moved into Conejo Valley’s Westlake Park Place, a new 27-acre campus style office development. Occupying the entire 4th floor with 20,000 square feet, the Cydcor office’s new space is almost twice the size of its current location, which the company occupied for the past seven years.

Cydcor also puts a large emphasis on corporate philanthropy in Cydcor’s community. This past year, the Cydcor hosted Business Building Blocks, a weekend filled with philanthropic and training activities with the Boys & Girls Club of Venice for soon-to-be office owners. Cydcor also hosted a toy drive to benefit Childrens Hospital Los Angeles during its annual corporate kick-off meeting. Last fall, Cydcor donated groceries and hygiene products to a Manna-sponsored food drive and helped more than 500 Sylmar families who lost their homes in the Sayre fire. Last spring, the Cydcor joined the ranks of Ventura county businesses for some friendly competition during the 2009 Ventura Corporate Games. Cydcor kicked off its participation by lending a hand (and a shovel) at one of the group’s community service events – the Harbor Wetlands Restoration Project.
